Compare income with
accumulated wealth

The salary is a flow. The balance sheet is what has accumulated.

Fictional household A

£90,000 income

£40,000 savings. £30,000 pension wealth. £10,000 belongings. £20,000 other debt. No property.

£60,000 total net wealth

Fictional household B

£35,000 income

£450,000 property equity. £400,000 pension wealth. £100,000 savings. £30,000 belongings. No other debt.

£980,000 total net wealth

Illustrative arithmetic, not survey respondents. Income alone does not determine net wealth.

Which household is richer?

A has the higher annual income. B owns substantially more net wealth. We would need their spending, household sizes, age and other circumstances to answer a question about day-to-day living standards.

A single combined score would hide those distinctions. The calculators keep the measures separate.

Pick the question first

How high is my annual income?
Use the individual taxpayer income calculator. Combine relevant personal income sources before tax.
How well paid is my job?
Use salary by age or salary by work region. These comparisons cover full-time employee jobs in the dated ASHE series.
How much has my household accumulated?
Use the wealth calculator. Count assets and debts consistently with the household survey.
What can we actually spare?
Use your actual net household income and spending in household headroom. That is a cash-flow calculation, with no percentile attached.

Population definitions and original statistical sources are set out in the methodology.
