The published wealth thresholds
These are whole-household totals. A pension pot belongs in the calculation.

“Millionaire” leaves a lot unsaid
A household with a home, accrued pensions and some savings can have a large balance sheet without anything like that amount available to spend. The wealth measure counts those assets.
Someone newly earning £100,000 may have little accumulated wealth. Someone retired on £35,000 may own a mortgage-free home and have substantial pension assets.
What £1 million actually means here ↗Count each debt once
Property equity is the value of the property minus its mortgage. Then subtract other debts from financial assets. Do not subtract that same mortgage again.
Defined benefit pensions need a capital valuation consistent with the survey’s method. Entering the annual pension payment would substantially understate the asset. The State Pension is excluded from this total.
Current asset values are compared with a 2020–22 distribution. There is no automatic inflation or house-price adjustment.
