How close is £200k to the top 1%?
The 2023/24 HMRC threshold was £207,000 of total income before tax for an individual taxpayer. £200,000 is £7,000 below it. A rounded headline such as “top 1%” would erase that distinction, so the tool keeps the threshold visible.
The HMRC series has published anchors at the 95th and 99th percentiles. An interpolated rank between them is only a guide. Above the highest anchor, this site gives a top-1% band and stops. There is no extrapolated 99.97th-percentile claim.
A very high annual income creates capacity to save, but it does not disclose accumulated net worth. Borrowing, a recent pay rise, asset ownership and the length of time earning that amount can produce very different household balance sheets.
