The income answer
The 80th-percentile threshold in the HMRC 2023/24 income series is £49,900. A total income of £50,000 is therefore just above that threshold. This is an individual taxpayer comparison; it does not say that four-fifths of every UK adult earn less than your salary.
In the 2024 provisional ONS series, £50,000 is the 90th-percentile salary for the 22–29 group. It falls between the 60th and 70th percentiles for full-time employees aged 40–49. The same number can feel very different depending on the people around you.
London’s 2024 full-time median was £47,455. £50,000 is above it, though much closer to the London median than to the £37,430 UK-wide median in that same series. A work-region pay rank makes no adjustment for your rent.
